Shike Shuzoten, founded in 1845 and rooted in Uchigo, Iwaki City, is a venerable brewery boasting overwhelming support in the local area. Its origin is pure and passionate: the first generation Matabee, an unparalleled sake lover, began brewing to pursue the best sake that could satisfy himself.
The founder called himself "Makoto no Sakenomi" (The True Drinker), and this "love for sake" has been inherited by the 7th-gen Hisao Shike, who continues to brew "sake that pleases local people" without any compromise. Despite the difficult conditions of Iwaki's warm climate, they achieve extremely stable high quality through traditional Southern (Nanbu) TOJI skills and precise "Moromi" (mash) management. Using carefully selected Fukushima "Yume-no-Ka" rice luxuriously, they complete a transparent brilliant aroma and a rich umami that swells in the mouth.
The flagship brand "Matabee" boasts such fame that no one in Iwaki City doesn't know it, and the honor of winning the Gold Medal at the National New Sake Awards for six consecutive years eloquently tells of its prowess. As the "ultimate community-based brewery" with 90% of its production consumed locally, they are a proud brewery continuing to support Iwaki's food culture and people's smiles.
