Yamaguchi Shuzojo is a long-established brewery founded in the Tempo era of the Edo period, located in Kitano Town, Kurume City. The story of "Niwa no Uguisu" (Nightingale of the Garden), which became the origin of the brewery's name, began when the 6th generation owner Risuke Yamaguchi saw a bush warbler flying from the nearby Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to drink and play in the spring water of the brewery's garden, and vowed, "This water is pure, and I will brew sake worthy of the name of the Tenjin deity."
With a history of over 190 years since its founding, the main brewery operates a direct sales shop in a quaint 260-year-old building, selling products such as "Niwa no Uguisu," "Uguisu Toro" plum wine, and amazake. Currently led by the 11th generation owner Tetsuo Yamaguchi, they are challenging the creation of new value for sake with the aim of "sake that makes you want to drink another cup."
Using the clear water welling up from the sacred water vein of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine as brewing water, they continue sake brewing rooted in local history and culture. While protecting tradition, they are characterized by their attitude of not fearing innovation and working on the pursuit of sake quality tailored to the times and the development of new products.
