Hokkan Shuzo is a historic sake brewery located in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, with roots dating back to the Tenpo era (1830–1844). While inheriting nearly 190 years of tradition, the current company was established in 1973 through the merger of three local breweries, blending ancient techniques with cutting-edge brewing technology.
Tochigi City, where the brewery is based, is a historic town known for its traditional storehouses ("Kura no Machi") and a rich culinary culture. Using pure local groundwater and carefully selected sake rice, Hokkan Shuzo combines precise computerized temperature control with the refined senses of master craftsmen to achieve superior brewing.
The flagship brand, "Hokkan," was named with the ambition of becoming the "Crown" (Kan) of Northern Kanto (Hokkan). Through continuous quality improvement, the brewery has won numerous gold medals in domestic and international competitions, earning recognition as a leading Tochigi brewery that delivers consistent quality and deep-flavored sake to the world.
