Rikyugura, located in Sakai City, Osaka, is a pioneering brewery that has revived the sake brewing culture of the former free city of Sakai, once known as the "Venice of the East." Although Sakai once boasted about 100 breweries during the Meiji period, the light of in-house brewing had gone out after 1972. Rikyugura has attracted significant attention as the sole brewery to revive local sake production in Sakai in 2015, after a 44-year hiatus.
Starting its brewing on the site of a former long-established ryotei (traditional restaurant), it initially used the TTM system (borrowing other facilities), but now holds its own formal brewing license in Sakai and conducts authentic brewing in a new facility equipped with the latest systems. Their brewing is characterized by a fusion of tradition and innovation, centered around a brand named after the great tea master Sen no Rikyu, who was born in Sakai.
The sake they aim for features a delicate and harmonious flavor that resonates with the spirit of the tea ceremony. Carrying the history and culture of their hometown Sakai, they continue to create a new "Sakai Sake" for the next generation, striving to regain pride as a former sake-producing region.
Leveraging its advantages as an urban brewery and playing a role as a hub for regional history, it is a brewery that symbolizes the rebirth and challenge of Sakai City.
