Horan Shuzo was a venerable brewery founded in 1881, once located in Ohtawara City, Tochigi. Blessed with the rich nature of the Nasuno-ga-hara plateau and pure groundwater, it preserved traditional brewing deeply rooted in the community for over 130 years. The name "Horan" is derived from the "Ho-oh" (phoenix) and "Ran-cho" (simurgh), legendary auspicious birds in Chinese mythology, and was cherished as an elegant name expressing celebration and nobility.
Its flagship brand, "Horan," was characterized by a calm and deep flavor that complemented the local food culture of Ohtawara. However, due to declining sake consumption and changes in the business environment, it brought its long history to a close in 2019.
Although it is no longer in production, it remains etched in the memories of many as an important presence that graced the history and culture of Ohtawara City.
