Shimazaki Senji Shoten was a historic sake brewery that operated in Motegi Town, Tochigi Prefecture, for over 300 years since the Edo period, but regrettably closed its doors in 2014. Under the trade name "Sakaeya," and with the head of the family inheriting the name "Rihee" (Rihei) for generations, it was a symbolic presence in the local brewing culture.
The 3rd generation Sakaeya Rihee was not only a merchant but also a renowned artist known as Shimazaki Unpo (1731–1805), famous for his ink wash paintings. The current Shimazaki Shuzo in Nasukarasuyama was founded by his brother Hikobee as a branch, while Shimazaki Senji Shoten served as the main household.
The flagship brand "Sengetsu-ka" was known for its rich, mellow umami and solid presence balanced by a clean finish. Its quality was highly acclaimed, winning a gold medal at the National New Sake Competition in 2004.
Although they no longer brew today, their contribution in supporting Motegi's sake culture for over three centuries is deeply engraved in the history of Tochigi's sake heritage.
