Watanabe Shuzo was a historic sake brewery founded in 1877 in Musashimurayama, Tokyo. Originally involved in oil pressing and soy sauce production, the family expanded into sake brewing during the early Meiji era. For nearly 130 years, they were a cornerstone of the local community, led by their signature brand 'Ginsetsu.' The brewery was known for its innovative spirit; during the mid-Showa era, they pioneered the revival of Junmai sake and Yamahai brewing techniques, and even developed low-alcohol sake (8%)—forward-thinking moves for the time. They also managed a direct sales outlet and pub in Nishi-Ogikubo. Despite their proactive approach, the brewery closed in 2007 due to changing market conditions. While the site is now a residential area, the legacy of their pioneering craftsmanship remains a significant part of Musashimurayama's history.
