Toraya Honten is a historic sake brewery founded in 1788 by Omi merchants. It is one of the few urban breweries located in the heart of Utsunomiya, right next to the Tochigi Prefectural Government Office.
The origin of the brewery dates back to the first generation's impression of "Nijinoi," a famous water source that sprang up in this area. This well has been loved as one of Utsunomiya's seven famous waters, collectively known as "Nanamizu." For over 230 years since its founding, the brewery has continued to make sake using this water.
The soft quality of the water serves as the foundation for the soft mouthfeel and fresh crispness of their sake, with a strong focus on maximizing the water's unique properties.
Their main brands are "Nanamizu" and "Kiku." They have gained international acclaim, receiving the top awards at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) and the Oriental Sake Awards. With the concept of "exciting sake," the brewery continues to evolve through diverse sake making that brings out the best in different rice varieties, embracing both tradition and innovation.
