Mukai Shuzo, founded in 1754, is a brewery located along the coast of Ine Town, Kyoto, where the Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings "Funaya" stands.
With the brewery located in a corner of the unique "Funaya" where the 1st floor is a boat garage and the 2nd floor is a living space, it is known as the "Brewery Closest to the Sea in Japan."
Currently, Kuniko Mukai, the first female Toji in Kyoto, is in charge of sake brewing. While valuing traditional techniques, she challenges creative sake brewing not bound by fixed concepts.
In particular, the red sake "Ine Mankai" using ancient rice (red rice) has attracted attention from all over the world for its beautiful color and sweet and sour fruit-like taste, and gained high acclaim, such as being used at a luncheon of the G20 Osaka Summit.
Mukai Shuzo's sake, woven by the scenes of Ine's sea and the female Toji's sensibility, possesses a unique presence that makes one feel a new breath within tradition.
