Umegae Shuzo is a historic sake brewery founded in the mid-Edo period, bearing the distinguished name "Umegae" bestowed by Lord Omura Sumishizu, the feudal lord of the Omura domain.
Located in Joma-cho, Sasebo City, seven of its buildings including the main house, a bottling facility built in the late Edo period, the former muro, former brewing storehouse, and Taisho-era warehouses are designated as nationally registered tangible cultural properties.
The brewery boasts a diverse product lineup including nihonshu, shochu, liqueurs, gin, amazake, and pickles. Brewery tours are available year-round, allowing visitors to enjoy product tastings.
Its flagship brands Umegae and Kujukushima are beloved as representative local sake of Sasebo. Kujukushima is named after the 208 islands scattered across Sasebo Bay, inspired by their graceful scenery.
The brewery has won gold at the National New Sake Awards and consecutive excellence awards at the Fukuoka Regional Taxation Bureau competition, continuing sake-making that balances tradition with quality. The nihonshu brewed in these cultural heritage buildings conveys the history and culture of Sasebo to the present day.
