南は南酒造場の前蔵元である南拓治氏が、県外流通用のプレミアムブランドとして立ち上げました。県外に出荷する際は「南」のブランド名を使用し、高知県内では「玉の井」として販売されています。
高知の酒は一般的に「淡麗辛口」ですが、南は「芳醇旨口」という特徴を持っています。約90%が純米酒で、全ての麹は伝統的な「箱麹」方式で作られており、生産量は約300石に限定し、量より質を重視する姿勢を貫いています。
