Nishioka Honten, founded in 1782 (Tenmei 2), is a historic brewery located in Makabe-cho, Sakuragawa City, which has been selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Inheriting the lineage of Omi merchants, it is said that they started sake brewing after falling in love with the high-quality rice and water of Makabe.
Makabe is known as a production area of granite (Mikage-ishi), and they have inherited sake brewing for generations utilizing the pure underground water that springs up by permeating the granite layer and the rice of the rich granary area. Storehouses from the Edo period and buildings from the Meiji period still exist on the premises, protecting tradition within the historical landscape.
Based on the philosophy of "protecting good old things while challenging new attempts," they are working on brewing sake with new tastes tailored to the times, as well as traditional sake.
