Taninoi Shuzo, located in Soneda, Itakura-ku, Joetsu City, Niigata, was a historic brewery with about 150 years of tradition since the early Meiji era. Using its prized well water and sake rice such as 'Gohyakumangoku' and 'Yamada Nishiki,' it brewed clean, 'Tanrei Karakuchi' (light and dry) sake characteristic of the Joetsu region.
In particular, 'Otoko no Sake' (Sake for Men), launched in 1981, gained great popularity for its sharp dryness with unnecessary richness stripped away, earning strong support from local enthusiasts. However, due to persistent sales slumps amid a declining sake market and population, the brewery regretfully ended its long history at the end of September 2014.
Today, its 150 years of challenges and brewing traditions are cherished and passed down as a part of the regional history.
