Joban Shurui was a brewery formerly located in Iwaki City, Fukushima, marking its history alongside the region's progress. During the peak of the Joban Coalfield—once the largest coal mine on Honshu—Iwaki City was crowded with 30 to 40 breweries, where a local sake culture thrived to heal the thirst and fatigue of the laborers.
Joban Shurui played a part in this, continuing sincere brewing while paying the utmost attention to the temperature management of "Moromi" (mash) under the severe conditions of Iwaki's warm climate. Its flagship brand "Michinoku" (written as 美ち乃久) was named with affection for the rich nature and terroir of the Tohoku region and was loved by many. While it eventually closed down alongside the changing times, its achievement in supporting the vitality of the mining town and the lives of the people who lived there is still passed down as a precious page in Iwaki's local sake history.
