Ishikoshi Jozo was founded in 1920 (Taisho 9) when four local volunteers established a limited partnership and obtained a manufacturing license, and was reorganized into a joint-stock company in 1927 (Showa 2).
It is located in Tome City, one of the leading granary areas in the prefecture located in the northeastern part of Miyagi Prefecture, and 80% of its shipment is within the prefecture, receiving overwhelming support especially in the local area. It is no exaggeration to say that 80% of restaurants serving sake in Tome City serve "Sawanoizumi," and it is a brand loved in the region by far.
Initially, it began sales under the brand name "Sawano Tomo," but changed the trademark to "Sawanoizumi" in 1960 (Showa 35) by combining "Sawa" from "Nakazawa (Sawa)" where the brewery is located and "Izumi" (spring) that springs within the premises.
For local ingredients, environmentally preserved rice is used, and the "Sakamai Research Association" was established with local contract farmers to promote the production of sake brewing suitable rice "Yamada Nishiki," "Kura no Hana," and "Kame no O."
As the only sake brewery in Tome City, they continue sake brewing rooted in the region and are a sake brand very much loved locally.
