Koshi Meijo is a historic brewery born in 1934 in Tochio, Nagaoka, through the union of two older houses: Yamayaya (founded in the Kyoho era) and Yamashiroya (founded in 1845). Located in a lush valley where legendary warlord Uesugi Kenshin spent his childhood, the brewery utilizes the intense winter cold to craft its sake. They primarily use organic rice carefully cultivated in the terraced fields of the Tochio Ikazuchi district. Distinct from the typical light and dry 'tanrei' style of Niigata, their sake is characterized by a robust flavor that maximizes the umami and richness of the rice. Their sincere commitment to 'quality over profit' has earned their sake high acclaim both locally in Tochio and at international competitions.
