Daitengu Shuzo, founded in 1872, is the only remaining brewery in Motomiya City, Fukushima, deeply rooted in the local community. Its charming brick chimney, standing just a minute's walk from JR Motomiya Station, is beloved as a symbol of the town.
Its name originates from two Tengu masks that suddenly appeared from a wicker trunk in the storehouse during its founding. Believing this to be a "gift from the gods," they began brewing with an indomitable spirit. They use "Raijin Shimizu" (Thunder God Spring Water) from Mount Adatara's underflow for brewing and employ the traditional "Fune-shibori" (tank pressing) to maximize the rice umami.
With 80% of their sake consumed within the city, they are truly the "Treasure of Motomiya." The brewery's dedication toward the annual Adatara Shrine festival every October makes them an irreplaceable presence coloring local life and festivities. While preserving tradition, it is a heartwarming brewery that also plays the poetic sentiments of a land associated with "Chieko-sho."
