Kawamura Brewery (Kawamura Shuzojo), founded in 1909 (Meiji 42), is a brewery in Suo-Oshima with a history of over 110 years. It was brewing sake as the last brewery on the island with a 140-year history, but had been suspended about 20 years ago.
Kanako Sasano, who made a 'grandchild turn' (returning to her grandparents' home) from Osaka to the island, is taking on the challenge of reviving the brewery, attracting attention as an effort to revive in-house brewing at a suspended brewery in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The sake brands are 'Toyo Otoko Yama', 'Shuzan', and 'Enmei no Taki', with Toyo Otoko Yama being the brand created by the founder.
The quality of sake has been highly evaluated, and in the past, it received numerous awards including the Prefectural Governor's Award at the New Sake Awards. In 2025, sake brewed by renting another brewery was released as a commemorative limited sake for revival under the name of 'Toyo Otoko Yama', and it is restarting as the only brewery in Suo-Oshima.
