宗麟は小手川酒造が製造する、キリシタン大名・大友宗麟にちなんで命名された銘柄です。作家・野上弥生子（当蔵が生家）によって命名されました。
原酒はアルコール度数19%と高く、焼酎のような濃厚さが特徴。バタースコッチキャンディーのような濃厚な甘みとなめらかな口当たり、きめ細かく厚みのある旨味が楽しめます。
日本酒と焼酎の境界を越えた独特の味わいで、伝統的な甕貯蔵による熟成も特徴的。ロックでの飲用も推奨される、革新的な日本酒です。
