Matsuya Shuzo, based in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture, has its origins as a rice wholesaler in Toyama Prefecture during the Edo period before venturing into sake brewing in the late Meiji era.
The brewery eventually relocated to Fujioka to be closer to the Tokyo market and to take advantage of the region's excellent natural environment.
Under the 6th generation owner, the brewery has seen significant quality improvements, notably with the development of the limited-release brand "Ruka," which has earned prestigious gold medals at the Annual Japan Sake Awards.
